Edward Tufte is an "information designer." He is interested in this like charts and maps and schematics. (He's not so interested in comics, or pictographic languages, or movie technique.)

Edward Tufte is particularly famous for three books:

• The Visual Display of Quantitative Information

• Envisioning Information: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative

• Visual Explanations

I with there were some good category words to say things like "charts and maps" vs. "written pictographic languages" (like Chinese characters) vs. "movie technique" vs. "comic technique" vs. "sign language." That would help with the awkward "information designer" paragraph.
